Biography

Michael has been at the University of Northampton since 1996, he is currently the Programme leader for Fine Art Painting and Drawing and Senior Lecturer in Painting, teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and also supervising PhD students.

Michael completed his practice-based PhD in 2012 titled Contemporary Abstract Painting and Spiritual Experience - An Investigation through Practice. He is a practicing painter whose work explores the role of  abstract painting seeking to operate in a manner similar to past modes of transcendental abstraction but now located within a an increasingly secular culture and also recoginising the importance of recognising the impact of technological influences on painting. He has also had his writing published book form contributing to volumes such as Contemplations of the Spiritual in Art and Photography, Digital,Painting (Expanding Medium Interconnectivity in Contemporary Visual Art Practices) and in journals including The international Journal of Religion & Spirituality in Society and the International Journal of Jungian Studies.

Research Interests

Michael's research interests are rooted in his practice as a painter and in his accompanying writings. areas of interest include:

  • Apophatic modes of production and thought in art
  • Spiritual experience in contemporary painting (also including the numinous or transcendental abstraction) within a secular cultural context
  • Contemporary painting in a digital/technological context
  • Process based abstraction
