The Value of the Cadet Forces in Wales

Abstract

The annual cost of the Cadet Forces supported by the Ministry of Defence (Army Cadet Forces, Air Training Corps, Sea Cadets, Royal Marine Cadets and Combined Cadet Forces) is c. £200 million p.a.
In 2016 the Institute for Social Innovation and Impact (ISII) at the University of Northampton was awarded a contract by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to conduct research aimed at identifying the social impact and return on investment of expenditure on the Cadet Forces in the UK. The project runs until summer 2020.
The ISII research team produces an annual report for the MOD summarizing its iterative findings. In addition, members of the team have presented key findings to different audiences, including policy makers, teachers, senior officers in HM Forces, and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers1 (CFAVs).
As a result of a presentation given in Belfast in November 2019, Stephen John, the Schools Cadet Expansion Officer (SCEO) for Wales requested that the ISII team produce a paper discussing the potential value of the Cadet Forces within Wales.
